Program Details

Come explore Idlewild, Michigan, a resort and vacation area with deep roots in the African-American community which was once called the "Black Eden of Michigan." At its peak, it was one of the most popular resorts in the Midwest and as many as 25,000 would come to Idlewild in the height of the summer season to enjoy camping, swimming, boating, fishing, hunting, horseback riding, roller skating, and night-time entertainment. When the 1964 civil rights act opened up other resorts in many states to African-Americans, Idlewild's boomtown period subsided. Madame C.J. Walker, the first self-made U.S. woman millionaire of any race, owned property in Idlewild, Michigan. We will experience the area with day hikes in the Manistee National Forest, a canoe trip on the Pere Marquette River, and a visit to historical Idlewild. After that we will move on to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, one of the most beautiful places Michigan has to offer! The park was established for its outstanding natural features, including dunes, beaches, forests, and ancient glacial phenomena on the shores of Lake Michigan. Nights will be spent in cabins or in tents at full-service campgrounds.
